Expanding brain capability
Our brain is like a muscle, when not used it becomes lazy and weak. If you have been in bed for some time with an illness your muscles become feeble. When you first get out of bed it is difficult to even walk. Once you are using your legs again strength returns.
We can increase the capability of the brain just as we can increase muscle strength. A good place to start is by expanding the ways you use your brain. Doing mental activity that is not part of our normal brain processing, strengthens and expands the way we use our brain. The brain becomes accustomed at operating in a familiar way, we are creatures of habit. Exercising the brain with activity that is outside our normal thinking process will result in brain development. Learn a new language, do brain puzzles, have discussion with people who you do not usually communicate with, read outside of our usual genre, things that require the brain to process in a different way. The greater the variety of ways we use our brain the faster and stronger it becomes.
Accelerating Brain Processing
If your car has a lower octane fuel than it is designed for it will not run at full power. Likewise if the brain does not have the right fuel to operate at its designed speed it will not work to capacity. We need the right food to get the nutrition for the brain, plus effective breathing so the brain gets the oxygen required. Additionally we need a good vocabulary to have sufficient words for the brain to process at its designed speed. Few people realize that vocabulary is like the central processing unit of the brain. When learning a new language in the early stages we translate from the new language to our most familiar language. In our dominant language we have a wider vocabulary so our brain processes faster. Then, we translate back to the new language. We do this until our vocabulary in the new language increases, and then we think in this language as we have the range of vocabulary for our brain to process at the speed it is comfortable with.
Increase your vocabulary and your brain will process faster. Most people are brain constrained because our brains need a vocabulary level several times greater than we use in every day communication.
Smashing Roadblocks to brain input
Our efficiency with reading alters the way the brain receives and processes information. When we read poorly our minds are not as sharply focused on what we are reading. This is because our reading speed is out of synchronisation with our brain input speed. When reading efficiently we have a match with our brain speed, and then we take in information better, retain the material longer and have a greater enjoyment with reading.
Having assessed reading speed for many years we find a high percentage of people read far too slowly for their brain. When this happens people do not like reading. Furthermore many people believe that it is not possible to increase both your reading speed and comprehension. Within limits the faster we are capable of reading naturally the better the comprehension. Reading effectively is having the ability to alter your reading speed for the outcome needed, plus reading at a rate that matches your brain, and then you will have better comprehension.
The way most of us have been taught to read has only taught us to read and not read effectively. Prior to being able to read effectively I strongly disliked reading, as I was reading very slow (150 words per minutes) therefore I did not read much and missed out on gaining much more knowledge. Now I love reading, and am always looking for good books to read. Now I can take advantage of the massive amount of information available and build my skill and knowledge. Learning effective reading is in the top skills I have learnt in my life.
You too can build your reading effectiveness and enjoy the pleasure of reading in a way that matches beautifully with your brain capacity.
